Mudroom Ideas That Are Functional & Inviting (big and small!)
The mudroom is the drop spot when you come home and the launch pad when you leave.
It’s a room that serves many functions and it’s a room that can be quite hard to keep organized.
But, a functional mudroom is a beautiful thing!
1. Turn a closet into a mini-mudroom

If you don’t have a dedicated room for a mudroom, you can turn a small closet into a mini-mudroom like we did here.
We took the doors off and added a built-in bench with pull-out baskets underneath for shoe storage.
We also added some hooks on the wall for jackets, a shelf for hats and a basket for extra storage.
This closet is right off the garage so it’s the perfect spot to drop all of our things when we come inside.
My only regret with this space is not adding a boot tray on the floor.
I would recommend adding one if you have room because it’s so much easier to keep the floors clean!
2. Create a mini-mudroom with a hall tree

If you don’t have a whole room to dedicate to a mudroom, you can still create a functional space.
This mini-mudroom is part of a hallway, and it’s a great example of how you can still make the most of a small space.
The hall tree provides hooks for bags, a bench to sit on, and even a shelf on top for extra storage.
A rug adds a pop of color and pattern, and a basket under the bench is perfect for storing shoes.
3. Use a hall tree with a bench to create a mini mudroom

If you’ve got a small hallway or a corner of a room, you can still create a functional mudroom space.
This hall tree with a bench and hooks creates a designated space for hanging coats and bags, and the bench is the perfect place to sit and put on or take off shoes.
Add some baskets or bins underneath the bench to store shoes, and you’ve got a mini mudroom!
4. Use a storage bench to hide shoes

A storage bench is a great way to hide shoes and other clutter. It also gives you a place to sit while you take off your shoes.
This mudroom by us a stylish bench with built-in storage.
The baskets on top of the bench are perfect for holding things like hats, gloves, and scarves.
5. Consider a storage bench with a back

If you want a storage bench but also want to hang coats on the wall, a storage bench with a back is a great option.
The back of the bench can be a place to hang a few hooks for everyday coats and bags.
This is a great way to keep the area from feeling cluttered and to keep things looking more cohesive.
6. Add a cushion to your storage bench

Adding a cushion to a built-in storage bench in your mudroom is a simple and inexpensive way to make the space feel more inviting.
A cushion can also serve as a great way to add a pop of color to your mudroom.
I chose a neutral color for this cushion since the room already has a lot of color in it, but you could choose a cushion with a fun pattern or your favorite color.
If you want to make the cushion even more comfortable, you can add a piece of plywood on top of the bench and then add the cushion on top of the plywood.
This will make the cushion feel more like a couch cushion and less like a bench cushion.
7. Use a bookcase to create a mudroom in a small space

If you don’t have a designated mudroom in your home, you can still create a stylish and functional drop zone in a small space.
This small mudroom by Emily from Small Stuff Counts uses a bookcase to create a drop zone in the entryway.
The top of the bookcase provides a place to drop keys and mail, while the baskets below store shoes and other outdoor essentials.
The wall to the left is used for additional storage.
There are hooks for hanging jackets, a peg rail with baskets for storing hats and gloves, and a wall-mounted shoe rack.
Conclusion
Are you ready to get started on your mudroom? I hope you found some inspiration in these ideas! Whether you have a large space or a small space, it’s definitely possible to make it functional and inviting.
